December 7, 2013: leaving in 6 days!

Next stop Chile! And after that, Union Glacier Camp in Antarctica on Dec. 17. It’s been busy – from heading over to Wales for some training hikes to battling a horrible flu to getting all the equipment together, things have been pretty much non-stop. Things seem to be shaping up though: the last training hike involved carrying 26kgs of water up Pen y Fan in the beautiful Brecon Beacons, and I’m finally scraping the bottom of the huge tub of protein shake power. Meanwhile, the scales show I’ve gained 5kgs (!) so hopefully that will help deal with burning at least 4,000 calories / day during the expedition.

There have been reports of snowstorms in Antarctica but fingers crossed here the weather is kind to us from Dec. 19-25. And if not, we’ll be prepared! I’m trying to set up a GPS tracking website and should be able to receive emails – it would be wonderful to receive messages from friends and family while slogging through the cold!
