Greetings from Punta Arenas, Chile!

December 15, 2013:

After 28 hours and three flights (and thankfully, 0 pieces of lost luggage) I’ve arrived at the southern tip of Chile. It’s a balmy 12C today and people say it’s this windy all the time. Equipment checks have been made and tomorrow we all meet at 9am for a briefing on weather conditions and safety in Antarctica.

Punta Arenas is an interesting place – shanty-like in some areas, grand in a rather crumbling way in others. The atmosphere here seems good though, and every fourth person is dressed in climbing gear (and more often than not eating a lot!). Will be interesting to see whether we will be able to leave for Antarctica on Tuesday as scheduled – inclement weather caused the last few departures to be delayed. Fingers crossed!
